Okay, first of all let me say, if you drive a Miata, and you think its totally badass and awesome, good for you. This is about why they suck for me . (Idea was started between !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and myself)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
1.) There's no space for passengers
Driving a small car is fine, if you're say under 6 ft tall, but when you're 6'5, and whilst the miata has plenty of headroom with the top down, but in that awful event which would cause you need the top up (whether it be a nagging passenger, or weather) you'll be cramped with no headroom.
EXPAND
2.) Their owners are dicks
Sure not all Miata owners are complete and utter tools about their little "sports car" but many of them are as annoying as they can get, for instance I used to use a quite popular car app, lets just call it CB, anyways there was one guy who on every post on CB that was about a miata, he would put in all caps "MIATAGANG" (to this day I have no idea where the hell this comes from, but the dude owned like 3 Miatas), also they don't shut up about how great of a sports car it is.
3.) Not enough POWAHHH
The Mazda Miata was meant to be a sports car, yet it lacks one of the most important parts of being a sports car. The most powerful model you could get had 167 BHP, this means that it actually has LESS than a BASE MODEL Toyota Camry, and even if it is a blast to drive around corners, that doesn't make up for the fact that an old lady in her Camry could beat you on the highway.

Don't waste your time, honestly, if I wanted a decently cheap sports car with good handling and a manual I'd say a 3000 GT VR4/ Stealth RT/TT would be a better choice, or a built up 3rd gen (or even 4th gen) Camaro, or a C5 vette, or litterally just about anything else

I can understand that. Being a Brit, I'm firmly in the Hot Hatch camp so I have to deal with a lot of FWD Sucks posts in particular from Mx5 owners but for the most part I blow it off mostly because I've done the comparison back to back in real life and was so disappointed in the Mazda but mostly because I know that the best FWD cars are virtually non-existent in the States so I struggle to take their critique seriously.

Yes, they are. A decent C5 would be at least $12k, NA Miatas in similar condition are less than 5. And after maintenence, a 3000GT will be at least as costly as a Corvette
Not liking it because it's small has nothing to do with how they drive
ienjoyautomotives
> Jayhawk Jake
12/24/2014 at 20:42 | 1 |
That's 2 of the cars I mentioned, a catfish Camaro would be about the same, and those will drive great with some suspension work (the same amount of work would need to be put in a Miatas engine for it to keep up on the straights) and a 3rd gen Camaro would be even cheaper, listen it's great that you like the little car, but IT IS NOT FOR ME, and clearly there are plenty of people who agree, that doesn't mean i think Miata drivers should all die, it just means I'm not gonna drive one.

Okay so I'm on a burner account for this one for various reasons. In response to an earlier comment, you brought up the 3000GT/Camaro/Vette/etc.
That reply makes me think you don't understand why most Miata enthusiasts like Miatas. Also, I don't have a Miata yet, but it's coming soon.
It's BECAUSE they are so small. Cars that tiny have a certain feel to them and I completely understand why some don't like it. I disagree with a couple of your points, as I personally love the majority of owners I've come across, etc, but I respect your opinion.
If I were to win the lottery, the first thing I would spend it on would be a full Flyin' Miata V8 swap. A vette would be a better performer in just about every category, yes, that I get. I've tracked/autocrossed about 30-odd cars over the past few years, Vettes included. But there's just SOMETHING about that tiny car feeling. I don't even want an NB or NC. I just want an NA because it's that small.
Now I could be very wrong on this and I'm just speaking for me and nobody else lol but hey, maybe it will spark a conversation and hell, what else do we have to do right now? Spend time with family? Pssssssssshhhhh

"Cheap" doesn't belong in the same thought as "3000 GT VR4/Stealth TT."
DSMs can be good, cheap, and fast. The problem is you can only choose two of the three.
3rd and 4th gen Camaro, however...you're speaking utter truth there. There's no better performance bargain right now than a 4th gen F-body.

You and every other person on the planet have apparently had different experiences with Stealths. Like the Miata is generally held in high regard by people as a cheap, reliable sports car (I've never driven one, I don't particularly care for them...though I'd have more luck wearing one as a backpack than driving it), the Stealth and 3000 GT are generally regarded as complicated and not particularly reliable.

Guess I should've said "be open-minded within reason", as I'd never want to condone blanket non-judgment-ism in the face of facts. While FWD's drawbacks can in some cases be somewhat overcome (Focus ST, GTI, Mini), it's objectively limited in driving dynamics, and only exists because of engine/transaxle/wheel packaging. Give a Mazdaspeed 3 a driveshaft and it would immediately jump into a whole new class of performance.

Good for you. I own an 03 Miata and a 97 Talon TSI AWD Putting over 300hp to the wheels. While the Talon is fun to get into boost i cant really do it much. And it handles ok but nothing compared to my stock Miata. The Miata i can rail on almost anywhere cause its not crazy fast in the straight but i can throw it into corners and drive it like a gocart. Also it feels faster at 80 than my talon does at 110.

That's the thing I don't understand — with how many people run them at the event, you'd think one driver would have to be good.

I'm 100% sure that having tons of power isn't the most import part of a sports car. I believe the vehicle you thinking is called a "muscle car" or a "drag racer" or even a "truck". The most important part of a sports car is that it is quote: "blast to drive around corners" period.
Now if you want to win races, showoff, or set track records, yes THEN power is more important.
